The bookmakers have Caol Ila as a frontrunner with Lagavulin as 2nd and Laphroaig as a 3rd contender.
Caol Ila has a huge output, so I woudn't be surprised.
And CI would be a very good choice.

Just had a wee dram of the 17yo and it's Caol Ila a mile off. Lovely sweet, smoky peat. Delicious!

No.

To be honest if you'd given it to me blind I would've said Ardbeg.

Okay, I'll do a wee note in a minute.

I've just posted a note on my site too. I would swear that if you gave me that green bottle with the embossed 'A' and no label I would say Ardbeg...might be just a red herring (kipper) though.

it's seems that all these first three Port Askaig bottlings are coming from Caol Ila distillery.

I'm so glad to read this, as I received my Port Askaig 17 today and had a similar experience. Upon first nose and taste, I thought "ok...this is what Caol Ila 12 would be like with an extra 3% ABV and a little more complexity". Then I spent more time with it, and I started to wander over to the Ardbeg side.

If you served me Caol Ila 12 and Ardbeg 10 blind, then gave me the Port Askaig 17 and told me to guess which of the other two distilleries it came from, I would lean towards Caol Ila, but wouldn't be 100%. If you had me do the same test, but used Caol Ila 18 instead of 12, I'd probably guess that the PA was an Ardbeg (Note: I prefer the CI 12 to the 18).

I was feeling very disappointed in myself for not finding it 100% obvious that Port Askaig is Caol Ila. I'm going to have to revisit this tomorrow night.

I shared my bottle around Glasgow's Whisky Club a while back and there were mixed opinions as to whether it was more like Ardbeg or more like Caol Ila. Still a very tasty dram, though!
